My Philosophy

Good therapy is a blend of art and science. There is a need to understand there are certain facts out in the world, but the meaning we give to the world we inhabit is infinitely more complex. In therapy, establishing a sense of safety in paramount, as it is only from a safe place that we can feel confident to explore more challenging terrain. Additionally, there is a need to implement what is learnt in weekly sessions into day-to-day living in the world. Taking ideas and making them real is fundamental to what we try to do.

My Approach

My main approach is Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Therapy (AEDT). Accelerated – as it distils the best of psychodynamic approaches into something more focused to promote faster change. Experiential – because just talking about things is not enough: there must be deeper change that comes through feeling differently. Dynamic – as there is a keen focus on how we relate to ourselves and others, both consciously and unconsciously. AEDT is a relatively directive approach, which means the therapist does not take a passive role and is actively engaged in the process i.e. rate of talking in the sessions is roughly 60/40 client/therapist.

Motivation

In the 90’s, I lost my way for a significant period. Following this, I wanted to understand myself and others. Following extensive travel in the developing world, a keen social conscience emerged and consequently I wanted to do something meaningful.
