Philosophy

Our emotional health and how we are in the world is influenced as much by things beyond our conscious awareness as by things that are known to us. Therapy is about examining both what is apparent to us and what evades us. It is seeking the truth about ourselves and our problems and using this knowledge to promote positive change in our lives.

I believe that our relationship will be the most important predictor of therapeutic progress. I aim to offer you a safe space in which we can jointly and authentically engage with the lifetime of experiences that has brought you here to therapy. We’ll take time to understand what meaningful change looks like for you and how we can work together to achieve this.

Approach

I work with a full spectrum of adult clients, from those wanting to address specific difficulties to those wanting to better understand themselves and the patterns they may be repeating in life that keep them stuck. I tend towards an exploratory, rather than diagnosis-led, treatment approach.

I am trained in a number of therapeutic models, which I employ as appropriate to the individual, but my work is always dynamically-informed. This means that we will look to explore your conscious and unconscious motivations, experiences and feelings, and their bearing on your present-day difficulties. In other words, we will leave no stone unturned in helping you to develop a deeper sense of yourself and what is impeding your ability to live your life in the way you hope to.

I’ll seek to be alongside you, without judgement, as we tread the path that follows, while offering constructive challenge to support you towards increased personal insight, therapeutic change, and ultimately an improved relationship with yourself. I’ll respect you as the expert in your own life, while helping you to explore and make sense of things.

Motivation

It is, of course, a great privilege to be entrusted with another’s story, and this is always at the forefront of my mind as we build our relationship. An awareness of this privilege – and also the ways in which each person leaves their mark on my practice – drives me to want to do my very best for my clients.

I have also for many years sat in the other chair – across from a psychologist – as a means of developing my own personal insight and professional practice. It is precisely because of my experience in both chairs that I wholeheartedly believe in the process of therapy and its potential to be transformational.
